Winter Camping Is Easy With a Diesel Heater!

Winter camping with Chevrolet Colorado Trail Boss Truck Camper

Camping in a winter wonderland!

We’re just past new year, and it’s winter camping season. Just because there’s snow on the ground doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy an incredible camping trip - if anything, the winter wonderland adds an extra level of beauty to the trip, and being fully set up with a truck camper with all the gear means you can enjoy nature without being uncomfortable.

For new year, we embarked on a last minute winter camping trip near Pemberton. Heading up from Vancouver, we took in the amazing Sea to Sky Highway, and encountered a small amount of snow on the way through Squamish. Whistler of course yielded much more, being a world class ski resort, and dropping back down the other side to Pemberton, that snow stuck around. About six inches of the white stuff and temperatures around -3ºC meant a good blanket everywhere we looked. We were in for a treat.

A cosy setup is key, but bring warm clothes too!

You can pull into just about any forest service road in BC to find a camping spot - we chose to play it safe with a frequent spot of ours, a short distance up an old service road. The winter rated mud tires on the truck made easy work of the fresh powder, and we pulled in to our spot for the night, where we found our friends had already started a fire. What could be better?

New Year’s Eve under the stars is always a treat, and so we toasted to a great 2025, and an even better 2026 with some Prosecco and a slice of cheesecake (who says camping can’t be classy?), and sang the night away together. Scott’s rendition of One Last Breath by Creed was a particular highlight.

Do you think we brought enough blankets?

Before heading to bed, we fired up our new BougeRV Diesel Heater to get the tent nice and toasty before turning in for the night. We brought a bunch of blankets just in case, but the diesel heater was a godsend, and kept us toasty all night long. Wireless control via the BougeRV app that also controls the fridge meant we could turn it down low to go all night without getting out of bed, and ensured we slept soundly. So soundly that we slept in until almost 10am the next day… oops!

The BougeRV Diesel Heater makes winter camping a breeze

A solid breakfast of scrambled eggs on toast, and strong coffee by the fire in the morning started our day off right, and once we were done, we made the move to get back home. It wouldn’t be without drama though, as one of the party opted to take a creative line on the way out, and got his Rav4 stuck in the snow. Luckily a few able bodies and a set of traction boards got him unstuck, and we were on our way, with a highly recommended stop at Sunny Chibas in Squamish for a massive burrito on the way home.

Getting stuck is fun, so long as you have friends to help!

Short trips can be a lot of fun, and this one delivered, but it also highlighted just how good the Chevy truck camper can be for winter getaways, and would make the perfect vehicle for touring BC’s ski areas on a smaller budget, since many allow camping in their parking lots. This would allow you to roll the accommodation and vehicle costs into one, and save some money for the apres. Just make sure you include the propane fire pit and diesel heater add-ons!
